Why do HEIC photos need converting?

HEIC has been the iPhone's default camera format since iOS 11. It stores photos in about half the space of JPG, but Windows, Android, older software, and many websites can't open it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere.

Are my photos private?

Yes. The HEIC decoder (libheif, compiled to JavaScript) runs entirely in your browser — your photo is never uploaded to a server. The decoder itself is a one-time ~3 MB download that your browser caches.

What happens to Live Photos?

A Live Photo's .heic file contains the still frame, and that's what gets converted. The motion part lives in a separate video file and isn't carried over.

Will converting lose quality? Why is the JPG bigger than my HEIC?

JPG is a lossy re-encode, but at the default 90% quality the difference isn't visible for photos. The JPG usually is larger than the HEIC — HEIC compresses far more efficiently, which is exactly why so little else can open it.
